Trees clean our air, cool our spaces, give homes to wildlife, they shade and beautify our world. And now more than ever they need our care and attention.

In this conversation celebrating the tree, we are reminded of the diversity, magnificence and absolute necessity of Western Australian trees in the context of alarming loss over the last year in WA.

Our panellists come to this conversation with their unique perspectives on tree preservation and building the urban canopy, and while there might not be a tree hugger in sight, we’re aligned in our concern for our arboreal friends.

Meri Fatin – Facilitator

A graduate of WAAPA, Meri Fatin is an RTRFM presenter and freelance producer. She has interviewed the likes of Margaret Atwood, Tim Winton, Julia Gillard and Ita Buttrose and has facilitated panels on harassment, health, and mining industry issues. More recently, she has focused on convening public conversations about Western Australia’s response to global challenges, including climate change.

Sue McDougall – Director of the Western Australian Botanic Garden

Sue McDougall is a horticulturist, landscape architect and a member of HMAA in Western Australia. She was appointed Director of the Western Australian Botanic Garden in 2021. With more than 35 years’ experience in horticulture, McDougall is known across Perth for sharing her gardening expertise in print, radio and television, and has represented the horticultural industry at state and national level.

Vern Newton – Director on the board of The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute

Vern Newton specialises in driving sustainable policies within corporate organisations. He engages with research institutes to achieve partnerships between industry and science, achieving a higher standard of restoration on the ground. He also liaises with government and regulatory bodies to ensure that restoration principles are a key focus for government.

Lara Rose Bos – Botanical artist and florist

Lara Rose Bos is a botanical artist with a passion for nature. Since her upbringing on an ornamental tree farm, she has become a devoted student of Arts and Horticulture, travelling widely in search of inspiration. She also draws inspiration from her mother, Dr Chrissy Sharp, an advocate for old-growth forest conservation for over 50 years.
