Artist in Residence | Natalya Hughes | 2023

August 7 to August 18 2023

Continuing our commitment to support the visual arts through connection and conversations, the State Buildings proudly welcomes our next Artist in Residence, Brisbane based artist – Natalya Hughes.

Natalya’s residency will commence on Monday 7 August where she will reside in-house at COMO The Treasury, and work from her open studio, The Mark, in the State Buildings for 2 weeks.

Paired with a program of public events, we invite you to experience this fascinating journey, wander through the artist space, meet Natalya and observe her practice in process.

Join us as we welcome Natalya Hughes – our fifth Artist in Residence.

Proudly supported by COMO The Treasury.

Natalya Hughes | Short Bio

Natalya Hughes’ multidisciplinary practice is concerned with decorative and ornamental traditions and their associations with the feminine, the body and excess. Through painting, textiles, sculpture and installation, her recent bodies of work investigate the relationship between Modernist painters and their anonymous women subjects. Using the life and work of major 20th century male artists, Willem de Kooning and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, as well archival case studies of Sigmund Freud, Hughes seeks to examine society’s ‘problems’ with women and the fraught associations that have ultimately determined them.

In 2022 Hughes was awarded the Michaela and Adrian Fini Fellowship by the Sheila Foundation to support the creation of a body of new work for the solo exhibition The Interior at the Institute of Modern Art (IMA). She was also the recipient of an Australia Council Project grant. This exhibition is scheduled to tour Australia until 2026.
