Meet Sophie Johnston
Meet our sommelier, behind our prestigious listing of wines across all our venues.
Born and raised in Perth, Sophie has spent a lot of time in restaurants and wine cellars. She had
many formative dining experiences here and abroad and so the love of food, wine and the drama
of all things hospitality was solidified.
As so many people do, Sophie began her hospitality career working in local restaurants while
studying at university. After a while, and much deliberation, the draw of restaurant life was more
appealing and architecture was left behind.
While living in London and briefly in New York, Sophie honed her barista skills working in cafes
and returned to Perth to a burgeoning speciality coffee scene. In 2014 she and her husband Adam
hatched a plan to open Daphne Cafe. It was a coffee shop/art space with studios above that was
a hub of creativity and community for the four years it operated.
When the cafe closed, Sophie delved right back into restaurant service at local favourite Shadow
Wine Bar where her lifelong interest in West Australian, French and weird wines was given an
opportunity to flourish. From there she worked in venues like Le Rebelle and Wine Loft to sharpen
her knowledge as her passion for wine grew.
After a two year long stint as the Venue Manager at Petition Wine Merchant, Sophie now works
more behind the scenes as the State Buildings Sommelier. Working closely with Director of Wine,
Emma Farrelly, she now is much more involved across all venues. Most importantly she is
surrounded by excellent bottles, excellent people and simply talking, pouring and enjoying wine
all day everyday.
